Ukraine is contracting for 1,000 Patriot missiles, Russia is developing new ballistic missiles, and negotiations are resuming without a clear peace plan
The main topic of the day has been the struggle for the future of Ukraine’s air defense. Kyiv is finalizing contracts for approximately 1,000 Patriot missiles, but the main deliveries are not expected until the coming years. Therefore, Ukraine is asking its partners to transfer interceptors from their stockpiles immediately. The shortage is becoming a global problem: during a single Iranian strike, U.S. Patriot systems could have used up about 60 expensive missiles in just one night.
Meanwhile, Russia is developing a new ballistic threat. According to Ukrainian intelligence, by the end of 2026, Moscow may complete testing of a missile with a range of up to 800 km, which would expand the risk zone to cover virtually the entire territory of Ukraine. In the Donetsk region, pressure on Sloviansk and Kramatorsk continues, although the Russian advance remains slow.
At the same time, the long-range war is increasingly spilling over into Russian territory. Following an attack on Novorossiysk, Russian authorities reported four dead and 29 injured, while Ukraine claimed to have struck military targets. In Romania, intelligence agencies reported that a Russian sabotage operation—linked to the surveillance of NATO facilities and Ukrainian aviation—had been foiled.
On the diplomatic front, the Kremlin is once again declaring its readiness for trilateral talks with Kyiv and Washington, but there is no concrete plan to end the war. Meanwhile, Ukraine needs to find an additional $27 billion for defense, and inflation has already accelerated to 8.1%.
