Russia is stockpiling missiles and preparing new attacks, Ukraine is strengthening its air defense, and Europe is increasingly openly preparing for a possible confrontation with the Kremlin
The main topic of the day was Russia’s preparations for an even longer air war. According to Zelenskyy, Moscow already has up to 630 ballistic missiles and aims to produce about 100 per month. At the same time, Russia is scaling up production of high-speed “Banderole” missiles, testing new strategies involving carrier drones, and using Chinese components that allow drones to attack targets deep in Ukrainian territory.
Ukrainian air defense forces shot down more than 4,600 missiles and drones in August, but the burden continues to grow. The Kherson region endured about 6,000 drone attacks in just one week; in Mykolaiv, a series of strikes destroyed “Epicenter,” and an attack on “Kametstal” in Kamianske claimed five lives. In Kryvyi Rih, an investigation is ongoing following a strike on the “Sunny Gallery.”
At the same time, Moscow speaks of peace but rejects the framework proposed by Kyiv and has not responded to the proposal for a broader ceasefire. The U.S. is once again preparing diplomatic contacts, but there has been no breakthrough yet.
The threat is increasingly spreading beyond Ukraine’s borders. European intelligence agencies are warning of a new wave of sabotage and assassination attempts; NATO has declared its readiness to respond more forcefully; and military planners acknowledge that Europe is still not sufficiently prepared for a protracted war of attrition. Against this backdrop, Ukraine is ramping up its own drone production and considering the localization of Western fighter jets.
