That only makes the situation more complicated.

Because their influence already exists without one.

Lesser Houses begin coming to the Voronoveli. Not to become their property. Not to surrender their blood, lands or will. They seek seniority through protection — a system in which the stronger House accepts a duty to defend, but gains no right to own those under its protection.

For Mark, this becomes one of the most important tests of his entire arc.

And precisely because of that, the central question is no longer how much authority he can take, but whether he can stop at the point where protection ends and control begins.

But the political crisis is only the first layer of the novel.
