“Legacy of the Voronoveli. First Midnight”: a family awakening alongside the power that was hidden from them for years

Some stories begin with a prophecy. In “First Midnight,” magic begins with a missed phone call.

At 11:17 p.m., Mark Voronoveli sees his father’s name on the screen — and does not answer. Within hours, almost nothing will remain of their parents’ house, Mark, Yegor and Danylo will stand together beside two graves, and the ordinary lives of the three brothers will be over for good.

What should have looked like a tragic fire quickly gathers details that refuse any simple explanation: several separate points of ignition, a hidden passage beneath the house, strange traces, black feathers, and the growing sense that their parents had been hiding something from them until the very end.

This is how “Legacy of the Voronoveli” begins — a contemporary dark fantasy series centered not on a chosen hero or a battle for a magical throne, but on three brothers who have long since learned how to live apart.

Mark is used to being responsible for everyone and almost without noticing turns care into control. Yegor has spent years standing between his two brothers, trying to understand both of them without losing his own voice. Danylo is the youngest, and nothing infuriates him more than other people deciding what he is allowed to know, do or risk.

They love one another.

But love does not automatically make them close.

That is why the most important magic in “First Midnight” does not begin when the brothers first touch their inherited power. It begins when they are forced to learn how to become a family again.

After their father’s death, the protection that concealed the brothers from the magical world for years collapses. The Voronoveli discover that they belong to one of the oldest bloodlines of magic, return to their ancestral estate and meet Viktoria Voronoveli — the grandmother their family had preferred not to speak about.

With her come the first answers.

And far more questions.

Why did their father hide his own children’s power? What frightened him enough to leave his sons without any knowledge of who they truly were? Who knew that the protection would disappear after his death? And why was the awakening of three Voronoveli heirs noticed by those who had apparently been waiting for it for years?

Inherited magic in this story is not a gift that instantly turns its characters into powerful sorcerers.

Power has a price.

It moves through the body, responds to fear, anger and will, and demands a level of control the brothers do not yet possess. Mark’s ring, Yegor’s pendant and Danylo’s bracelet do not create their power — they help guide it and, just as importantly, help them stop before it becomes too much.

The old Voronoveli estate is more than a Gothic backdrop as well. Its walls, archives, locked doors, hidden rooms and generations of accumulated memory preserve far more than the living members of the family are willing — or able — to explain.

That is where the atmosphere of “First Midnight” takes shape.

Modern Ukraine exists beside a hidden magical world without a sharp division between the two. There are police investigations, trains, phones, hospitals, paperwork, family arguments and funeral arrangements.

And at the same time there are things that remain behind a door a little longer than they should. Fire that behaves incorrectly. Ravens that appear at moments when coincidence becomes increasingly difficult to believe. Ancient Houses for whom the name Voronoveli has never been just a surname.

Yet at its core, the novel is not really about magic.

“First Midnight” is a story about a family awakening.

It is about an inheritance that cannot be accepted without questioning the people who left it behind. About parental love transformed into silence and prohibition. About power that cannot fix anything on its own. About old wounds between brothers that do not disappear simply because a common enemy has appeared.

And about the decision to stay.

Blood has already made Mark, Yegor and Danylo brothers.

Becoming true Voronoveli — and becoming a family again — is something they still have to choose.

After the first midnight, there is no returning to the lives they had before.

The only question is who was waiting for them to awaken — and why the Voronoveli were hidden from the world for so long.
