About the series
Six centuries ago, the world belonged to the ancient Houses. They were older than nations. Their oaths outlived kings. Their blood remembered what humanity had not yet learned to name. Among them were the Thirteen. And there was a House that was not counted among them: the Voronovels.
When one of the most ancient crossed a line that did not yet exist in any law, one of the Voronovels stopped him. And the world witnessed a power for which it knew neither measure nor answer.
It was then, for the first time, that the Thirteen gathered in a single circle. Not for the sake of power. Not for the sake of peace. Not for the sake of victory. Out of fear. Thus was the Council born. Thus arose the Crown of their names. Thus did the thirteen fires blaze.
And the name by which they became the Thirteen fell silent for six centuries.
Generations passed. Borders shifted. Empires vanished and new alliances were born. Old wars became legends, witnesses—names in chronicles, and the fear from which the Council was born turned into history, the true origins of which were remembered by fewer and fewer.
And what once compelled the most powerful among the living to stand shoulder to shoulder became merely an entry in the deepest archives. And what people once feared to speak of aloud became a legend.
But the blood spilled at the heart of the First Circle remained set in stone.
For six centuries, it lay silent.
And then it recognized her again.
And among the thirteen flames, the Fourteenth flared up.
