Apple unveils $1,999 iPhone Duo: its first foldable iPhone opens a new era for the lineup
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone, with a 7.6-inch inner display, A20 Pro chip and a $1,999 starting price. Sales begin October 23, while Apple also refreshed the iPhone 18 Pro, Apple Watch lineup and AirPods.
Apple has made the biggest change to the iPhone’s physical design since the smartphone debuted in 2007. At its September 9 event, the company unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first model with a flexible display and a body that folds in half. The device starts at $1,999, with retail sales beginning October 23.
When folded, the iPhone Duo functions as a compact smartphone with a 5.4-inch outer display. Opening the device reveals a 7.6-inch screen, the largest ever offered on an iPhone. Both panels use matching proportions, allowing the interface and content to scale without an abrupt change in layout.
Apple built the device around the book-style format that competitors have used in foldable smartphones for several generations. The company is trying to differentiate the Duo not simply through a bending screen, but by integrating its hinge, dual displays, cameras and iOS 27 into one system rather than two phones joined together.
Daycom’s preliminary analysis of open and verified information indicates that the iPhone Duo matters to Apple as more than the most expensive handset in its lineup. The company is effectively testing whether it can turn foldable smartphones from a small premium niche into a meaningful segment of the broader market.
When fully opened, the Duo becomes the thinnest iPhone Apple has produced. The chassis is made from Grade 5 titanium, while a purpose-built hinge is designed to deliver smooth movement and structural stability. Apple will sell the device in two finishes, Star White and Night Sky.
The inner display uses a dedicated coating designed to reduce reflections, while the software adjusts to the position of the device. Users can run two applications side by side on the larger screen, placing the Duo somewhere between a conventional iPhone and a small tablet in terms of how it can be used.
Performance comes from the A20 Pro, the same new processor used in the iPhone 18 Pro. In the Duo, it is paired with a vapor-chamber cooling system and two battery modules distributed across the folding body. Apple says the phone is designed to deliver flagship-level performance with all-day battery life.
The cameras also take advantage of the folding design. Users can shoot selfies with the main camera while framing the image on the outer display, or show a live preview to the person being photographed. When partially folded, the device can act as its own stand for photography, video recording and video calls.
One of the more unusual features is the ability to use the outer and inner displays simultaneously during FaceTime. Apple also introduced Dual Capture and Duo Preview modes, while the main 48-megapixel camera can record 4K video at up to 120 frames per second.
Software may ultimately determine whether the new form factor becomes more than an expensive technical experiment. iOS 27 includes an interface adapted specifically for two displays, while Apple is emphasizing multitasking, video, gaming and workflows that allow several applications to remain active at once.
The Duo is also one of the main vehicles for Apple’s expanding artificial-intelligence strategy. Its A20 Pro chip supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI, which the company is increasingly tying to personal context. Apple wants the smartphone to become the central intelligent device in a user’s digital life.
Price, however, will remain the most obvious barrier. The base model with 256 GB of storage costs $1,999, with additional 512 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB configurations available. Preorders open October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions, while retail availability begins one week later.
That price creates an entirely new upper tier for Apple’s smartphone lineup. The company will have to demonstrate that a larger display and foldable body provide enough practical value for consumers to pay almost twice as much as they would for a conventional premium iPhone.
Apple is entering a category that has still not reached the mass market. Global foldable smartphone shipments totaled about 20 million units in 2025, representing less than 2% of overall sales. Apple’s enormous customer base may now become the factor capable of pushing that share significantly higher.
The launch also carries symbolic importance because it is John Ternus’s first major product event since becoming CEO on September 1. The former head of hardware engineering succeeded Tim Cook, who moved into the role of executive chairman of Apple’s board after years at the top of the company.
Alongside the Duo, Apple refreshed its conventional professional lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max received the A20 Pro chip, a redesigned cooling system and a 48-megapixel main camera with variable aperture. Prices start at $1,199 for the Pro and $1,299 for the larger Pro Max.
The changes extended beyond smartphones. Apple Watch Series 12 gained a new Health Sensing System, more frequent heart-rate and heart-rate-variability measurements, and a readiness score designed to help users judge their capacity for activity. The same core functions were added to the Apple Watch Ultra 4.
The Ultra 4 starts at $799 and offers up to 45 hours of battery life while tracking outdoor workouts. Apple is increasingly positioning the watch as an independent hub for health, fitness and AI functions rather than merely an accessory to the iPhone, although some of the new capabilities will arrive later.
AirPods 5 became the more affordable part of the same ecosystem strategy. The $129 base model now includes active noise cancellation in an open-ear design, Live Translation and access to Siri AI. A $149 version adds wireless charging, longer battery life and swipe-based volume control on the stem.
The iPhone Duo nevertheless remains the centerpiece of the event. For the first time in years, Apple has changed not merely the specifications of its most important device but its physical logic. The central question is no longer whether Apple can build a foldable iPhone, but whether it can convince millions of people that a $1,999 phone is worth owning.
