For more than three years of the war, Ukraine refrained from conscripting men aged 18 and older, which is standard practice for many armies around the world. The decision to set the draft age at 25—though puzzling to some Western allies—deeply reflects cultural and social attitudes in Ukraine. But today, as Russia employs a strategy of attrition on the battlefield, the question of enlisting young people in the war is becoming increasingly pressing.
